08/28/11 - Private book release party for Erin Morgenstern’s debut novel, “The Night Circus” at picture-perfect Verrill Farms in Concord MA. I was there with Boston Phoenix editor Carly Carioli and staff writer Eugenia Williamson, who was researching her article on Erin. Photographer Kelly Davidson (see more of her work here!) shot some amazing portraits for us — see the cover, above, along with my snapshots of the scene & Kelly at work. Grab the print edition now thru 9/21/11.
The Phoenix’s Monkey Issue came out last Thursday - grab a copy while you can, and check out our special web page here. While we were putting together the issue, I came across a bunch of King Kong posters, both old and new, designed for the movie release, and for purely artistic purposes. Submitted here for your enjoyment.
Are you ready for the Rapture … issue? The Phoenix has some Rapt-astic articles in this week’s paper — our last issue ever!*
Cover was carefully adapted from the defunct Weekly World News’ December 28, 1999 (Y2K!) issue.
Oprah - All Good Things Must Come to an End (Fiction)
Larry Flynt on the End of Days
*May not actually be last issue ever.
Arriving at UNregular Radio’s Downtown Crossing HQ last week for a photoshoot, I was greeted by the sweet smell of marijuana smoke in the entry hall. I knew I was in the right place.
Together with unflappable photographer Joel Veak, we wrangled the nine major players of the Boston Internet radio station into 2 coherent poses. However, they did not have to be coerced into smoking, goofing around, and hamming it up for the camera with props from around their office/loft. At the end of the first shot (which made the cover). I hopped up on the table to join the fun for a few shots.

Last week when news broke that Osama bin Laden had been killed, we decided to scrap the cover we’d been working on to do an Obama cover. The right image/text combo eluded us until early Tuesday evening (our press deadline is Wednesday morning). Taking a working headline from our editor, I searched though a bunch of WWII propaganda posters until I found one that seemed a perfect fit, and modeled the Phoenix cover after it.
We published the ‘American Badass’ version. But as a nod to an Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All article we had in the issue, we mad an alternate version : “USAWGKTA.” Both are available for download at thePhoenix.com.
A strange assortment of WWII propaganda posters found while searching for inspiration for this week’s Boston Phoenix cover. Enjoy!
Took some inspiration from a 1960 Edward Gorey-illustrated copy of H.G. Wells’s ‘War of the Worlds’ and whipped up this poster and 2-sided postcard promoting a Boston Phoenix-sponsored free show in Austin TX next week.
Here’s the RSVP for the event.
Gallery of ‘War of the Worlds’ book covers here!
Bad Romance novels, Valentines for grownups, New England Porn Stars, Mad-in-Love-Libs and more!
Had lots of fun assigning & designing some (very) light reading & v-day fun stuff in this week’s Phoenix:
Clip-and-send Valentines from Paint Pens in Purses
Bad Romance Covers from Uncle Walter
Mad (In Love) Libs: The Trashy Date
and more here!
Grab a copy of the paper this week and hang award-winning artist Karl Stevens’s awesome cover illo above your bed!
Mayor Menino’s head in a jar! For the 1/21 issue of the Phoenix - Local Experts Predict the Boston of the Future - I had originally commissioned an illustration by the wonderfully talented and funny Michael Kupperman (see it above). However, the editors weren’t satisfied with how it turned out.
Not having time to rework the image or commission a new illo, I took the central concept of Menino still ruling the city as a head in a jar, and created the photo-collage that graces the cover. Also above is an earlier version that was rejected.
This week’s Phoenix: The Road to 2012. I altered this Wizard of Oz poster to put Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, and Mike Huckabee on the Yellow Brick Road to the White House. Read David S. Bernstein’s article here.
Not new, but new to me as of last week! Nic Cage as everyone.
And the reason I know about it: ‘The Year in Nic Cage’ by Eugenia Williamson — with illustration by the awesome Brandon Bird!
Discovered Regretsy’s April Winchell’s treasure trove of bad music while researching images of her. Enjoy!
